24 june 2022 dear friends, i first stepped foot on monhegan in august 2005. it was a vacation like no other, for at the time hurricane katrina was ravaging new orleans, and for an entire week, i was blissfully unaware of the storm’s impact upon the lives of so many inshore. the experience of being completely removed from the realities of the world, even if just for seven days, was one of the many reasons i promised myself i would return, and i have ever since until slowly, the island has become my home. i don’t feel that way this morning, for despite the stillness and light upon the harbor, another storm is raging upon our country inshore. it is one i don’t want to watch, and yet i am unable to look away. in a few hours the supreme court will announce their decision affecting the lives of every person in this country, but weighing most heavily upon any individual capable of carrying a child to term. i write to you from the middle of the ocean, and in doing so, i can’t help but acknowledge my privilege, but these words equally express the poignancy, the pain, and the urgency of the situation, and this time i will not look away. Muriel Rukeyser asked us to consider: what would happen if one woman told the truth about their life? the world would split open.
